Vista updating failed American teensexchat
I have a vista x64 box that is no longer able to apply updates from microsoft.
When I dig in looking for the problem I find this in the event log "could not be installed because of an error: 2147956498 "The component store has been corrupted."" I cannot get system restore to go back far enough to escape the problem.

Due to issues with privacy, security, performance, driver support and product activation, Windows Vista has been the subject of a number of negative assessments by various groups.
It was a big task that ultimately failed for Vista, and Microsoft ended up integrating parts of Win FS into its SQL Server product.
Windows Vista also introduced a new Aero user interface.
Can you think of a way to fix this machine, or do I have to do a complete wipe and rebuild? But, the suggested utility failed on first run complaining that I needed to update some other windows installer component.
When I eventually get it running, I'll accept the answer.
Unfortunately for Windows Vista, it arrived at a time when Microsoft was operating at its worst.
The Mojave Experiment disguised Windows Vista features as a future version of Windows, where participants ranked Vista higher than their preconceived perceptions heading into the experiment.
It did little to stem the flow of negative complaints around Windows Vista.
But fixing this box is always about #17 on my todo list.
While it sounded promising the tool suggested by Martin did not work. More research lead to knowledge base article 946414 which has a link to a windows update Fix It tool.
Microsoft had ambitious ideas for Windows Vista in the years leading up to its release, including a new Windows Future Storage (Win FS) file system.
